OEGK - who we are

What is the ÖGKiZ and what does it do?

What is the ÖGKiZ and what does it do?

Dear Colleagues, dear parents, dear children!

The ÖGKiZ (Austrian Society for Paediatric Dentistry) was founded in 2005. It sees itself as a union of dentists, who have a special interest in treatment of children and adolescents and have developed in this field. Its Board of Directors and members are working to promote and improve paediatric dentistry in Austria for the benefit of young patients. This includes, on the one hand, practice in healthcare facilities, outpatient clinics and medical institutions; on the other hand the continuous training at meetings, congresses and special training courses, as well as training at universities and the promotion of the discipline.

It is our special desire and our goal to promote and work for the prevention of dental decay in the first place in order to be able to refer young people with good dental health and positive experience to other colleagues. The current figures show that oral health of the young people has improved significantly over the past few years, but that there is still a lot of catching up to be done, especially in the case of very young children, both in the prevention and in the care of existing caries.

In addition, our special focus is on children with disabilities, their basic dental needs or possible anxieties, which can often only be treated with special intervention techniques and at times need to be taken care of beyond their youth.

The ÖGK therefore sees itself as an association representing the interests of colleagues, parents and children.

Our objectives are:

• High qualitative standards around care and treatment of dental problems in children

• Improvement of oral health in children

• Treatment of children and adolescents with special needs

• Treatment of children and adolescents with previous difficult experience at clinics or patients who are difficult to treat

• Development of training courses on paediatric dentistry and assurance of best practise standards

• Collaboration with paediatricians, dentists of other disciplines, hospitals, national and international professional associations

• Communication of relevant topics to the general public, to parents and / or education staff

• Promotion of up- to date scientific knowledge and evidence based practise

• Special attention is given to socially disadvantaged children as well as children with a migration background

• Support around professional and policy matters for colleagues

• Representation of interests for colleagues

• A forum for exchange of specialist information and mutual assistance from colleagues for colleagues in a joint umbrella association

• Opportunities for colleagues to constantly improve their knowledge in all areas of paediatric dentistry

• Contact point and support for parents and carers

• Awareness promotion for parents, carers and colleagues in their role and responsibilities around the prevention and treatment of dental disease in children

Yours,

The Executive Board of ÖGK
